*Part 7... Slept On Hip Hop In The 90's (1996)*

Someone posted a comment ealier on what I'm going to post to counter DJ Shadow's track "Why Hip Hop Sucks in 96". All i gotta say is When the east is in the house...oh my god...DANGER! This was the single greatest year for hip hop in Brooklyn.... Blahzay Blahzay, Cella Dwellas, Heltah Skeltah, Jay-Z, Jeru the Damaja, M.O.P., O.G.C., Trigga The Gambler & Smoothe Da Hustler all released phenomenal BK albums. De La Soul, Dr. Octagon, Ghostface, Mobb Deep, Nas, Ras Kass, Keith Murray, & 2Pac were right beside making the rest of the world stay lovin hip hop. All these albums became classic or near classic material....sorry DJ Shadow....guess you was wrong!

Blahzay Blahzay - Blah, Blah, Blah
The greatest memory i have of this group was back in 96 my boy John Wallace (Syracuse Orangeman) & the Cuse had just beaten Memphis State to go to the NCAA championship game against Kentucky. I think it was Chick Hearn that asked Wallace how he felt..and the whole Cuse team...including Hearn started shouting "When the Cuse is in the house...Oh My God....Danger!" and dancing right on national TV. Great shit right there. Anyway Outloud was never the most skilled MC on the mic, but his witty rhymes & PF Cuttin's production made this album one of my favorites in the 96. I have always favored the sample heavy production style & this album takes no shorts.

Bahamadia - Kollage
MC Lyte was the only female MC that could hang with the boys untill Bahamadia came in the game. she was a protégée of Gang Starr's Guru & DJ Premier, and it show there influence throughout this album...top notch production and a hard streetwise rhyme style mad Kollage one of my favorite female MC albums of all time.

Mad Skillz - From Where?
This is one of my favorite albums to come out in 96..This Viginia cat is lyrically off the chain..and with production by Buckwild, The Beatnuts, JD, Large Professor, Shawn J Period, Clark Kent, Ez Elpee & Skillz himself. Check this album out, DO NOT SLEEP

Real Live - The Turnaround: A Long Awaited Drama
Password: killakom
K-Def, and Larry O got some Real Live Shit for you on this album. Once again this is another sample heavy hook album that fits that 95,96 style so well. 15 Head noddin' tracks, co produced by legend Marley Marl.

Prince Paul - Psychoanalysis: What Is It?
The debut album by one the most brilliant rapper/DJ/producer of all time. Funky beats and off the wall soun clips take you on a journy through the mind of the Prince.Guest appearences by Dan the automater and Kool Keith round out what is one of the best cd's to come along, in a long time in any era.

Cella Dwellas - Realms 'N Reality
Flatbush, Brooklyn artists the Cella Dwellas toiled underground surfacing in early 1995 on a Masta Ace B-side titled "For the Mind." The Dwellas' underground respect created enough of a stir to get them signed to Loud Records & release IMO the most slept on album of the year! Horror-core and straight-up hardcore hip-hop perfectly mixed into one.

Heltah Skeltah - Nocturnal
I just remember my boy Tor from The Co. {Coalesence} was tellin me bout the time he was in the studio with Rock & Sean Price during the recording of "Soldiers Gone Psyco" & aftrwards he realized what real hip hop was ... Real, Raw & Hardcore at its finest! Front to back This album is pure Brooklyn NY. One of my favorite duo's in all of hip hop!

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
The album that changed sample based music. Never sounds obvious or wholly uninteresting. Opened so many doors for me. Even if you're a rock junkie this album will somehow appeal to you. Good DJs, like good jazz players, make you experience them in new ways & Shadow is just that!

Crooklyns Requst List!

-Kam - Made In America
-Milk - Never Dated
-Red Hot Lover Tone - Red Hot Lover Lover Tone

S.C.C.

You must've heard of South Central Cartel

members: Havoc & Prodeje

the names always weirded me out (with the the Mobb Deep similarity). I always assumed it was a reference to something I wasn't hip to.

Sorry son...I don't have that "Murder Squad" album.... I almost put South Central Cartel "N Gatz We Trust" on here...That was one of the last west coast jerry curl groups i loved.... was that just a coincidece they named themselves Havoc & Prodeje?

Thanks for the good words Tactic's...ive heard a few guest appearances on a few Brooklyn Mixtapes from Outland of Blahzey but nothing solo!

I just think it's too weird to be a coincidence.

That N Gatz We Trust album is tight.

That guy who sings on Seventeen Switches (LV) was like what Nate Dogg became - he laced up countless tracks for everybody.

The Murder Squad shit was tight. It had SCC, Chi-lites, Ice-T, Spice 1, Ant Banks, Boss, Treach, LV, G-Nut, Big Mike, Tre-Duce, Sh'Killa, Young Murder Squad, and a grip of other people on it.

Classic West Coast shit peoploe were napping on.

that blahzay is hot, its dark, and he's underrated, to me the standout songs
good cop/bad cop, and sendin' dem back, the kollage album is siiiiiick, they really hooked her up on the production, and she is mad underreated, she's one of the best female mc's out there, she's in the top 5, philly got talent don't sleep, standout tracks to me are Spontaneity (same beat as leflah but a lil more darker and hot beat by beatminerz), Rugged Ruff,Total Wreck (guru did his thing on this beat ill dark beat, it sounds like somethin beatminerz would do),Innovation,True Honey Buns (Dat Freak Sh*t),3 the Hard Way.Mad Skillz album was mad good, underrated album, real live's album to me is one of the illest releases of 1996 but so many good shit from 1996 was good but its hard to choose, the production was bananas,k-def is mad ill but very very underrated, all the beats is mad dark which i like, and larry-o is hot lyrics ain't all that but it makes u nod ur head, stand out tracks, Pop The Trunk,Ain't No Love,All I Ask Of You (Commin' Thru),The Turnaround,Real Live Shit,Crime Is Money (hot beat, nas used the same sample which by the way is a sick song by nas it fits him i hope his album sounds like that), and the Real Live Sh*t Remix.Cella Dwellas album is sick, production is bananas its dark as hell, standout tracks are,Mystic Freestyle,Perfect Match,Hold U Down, and Worries, and finally heltah skeltah, this album is the best album they ever released, magnum force was garbage, they tried goin commercial which was a bad move for them, but production here is hot as hell, standout tracks,Understand ,Clan's, Posse's, Crew's & Clik's,Therapy(i like pete rock and cl smooths carmel city version better),Soldiers Gone Psycho,Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka, and Grate Unknown. im only 19 but niggas my age is blind or deaf when it comes to hip hop, they too ignorant or they just don't care.peace.
